IS THE PROGRAM ACCREDITED AT COLLEGE OF STATEN ISLAND?

ACCREDITATION

The Bachelor's degree in Engineering Science offered at the College of Staten Island prepares students to enter the Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering Fields. The CSI Engineering Science program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET). The faculty of the CSI Engineering Science program strongly encourage students to take the test for the professional Engineer license.

ARE PROFESSIONAL SOCIETIES REPRESENTED ON THE CAMPUS?

PROFESSIONAL SOCIETIES

THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF EXISTANCE OF PROFESSIONAL SOCIETIES AT THE CAMPUS

Student Chapters of all the major Engineering Societies are very active on the campus. The societies represented are ASME ( American Society of Mechanical Engineers ), IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers ) and SWE (Society of Women Engineers ). Membership in these societies is encouraged because they help prepare students for employment. Corporate recruiters visit them, field trips to corporations are undertaken and work-study programs are undertaken through them. Students also make friends via the societies and, thus, establish an important networking foundation which assists them later in the working world. The societies also sponsor lectures on current engineering problems and solutions.

HOW DO THE STUDENTS AT CSI COMPARE WITH OTHER SCHOOLS?

RECENT STUDENT AWARDS

We are extremely proud of the following national awards earned by the students.

1. Two of the students, Joseph Franco and Mark Lombardo won first place in the Northeastern Regional ASME design Competition. Beating schools like Polytechnic Institute, City College -CUNY, Cooper Union, Columbia, etc.

2. Our students Serge Tchikanda won first place at the 1995 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition for the Bioengineering division's Bachelors Level Student Paper Competition he presented in San Francisco. Competition was stiff with Michigan State University, Purdue, Universities of Florida, Cincinnati and Minnesota being finalists. This was another national honor we are extremely proud of.

3. Mr. Indaka Jayawardene was awarded the American Physical Society's 1995 Summer Intern Program and was placed at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey. This was a national competition.

Over the years the students here have distinguished themselves and this is another strong indicator of the depth of knowledge students attain at the college here.

WHAT ARE THE RESEARCH AREAS IN THIS PROGRAM?<

FACULTY RESEARCH

There are wonderful opportunities for students to assist faculty in their research endeavors. The students who do research can either be financially supported via grants that the faculty have or they can earn independent study credit in their undertaking. Hence, the students doing undergraduate research build a more appealing resume to present to their prospective employers.
