Racquel Gates is an Assistant Professor in the department of Media Culture at the College of Staten Island, CUNY. Her work focuses on representations of race in popular culture and appears in Film Quarterly, Television and New Media, Antenna, In Media Res, the anthology Watching While Black: Centering the Television of Black Audiences, and the collectionSaturday Night Live and American TV. Her book, Double Negative: The Black Image and Popular Culture examines the concept of disreputable media in African American popular culture, and is under contract with Duke University Press.
